The challenge

The main challenge is to acquire knowledge about the performance of new materials based on carbon fibre composites, as it detects the emergence of competing brands in the market that present this type of materials in their products. Based on this situation, designing and developing thermoset composite butts based on carbon fibre finishes was defined as a priority, as it is perceived that carbon fibre may provide the lightness, aesthetic finish and performance required in a key element of the rifle, as the butt is the link between the rifle and the shooter.

The solution

The design and development of an initial version of thermoset composite butts based on carbon fibres in order to develop a high-end sporting rifle, aimed at a very select customer. After analysing the different technologies required to process this type of product, DIKAR entered the market in 2022 with a new range of sporting rifles based on carbon butts processed by RTM, on commencing its industrialisation with the creation of a processing cell for resin-injected butts with a lightweight carbon fibre finish with a current production capacity of 8,000 butts per year.

Results

  • High rigidity and specific strength of the butt.
  • High dimensional stability with zero coefficient of thermal expansion.
  • Excellent impact, scratch and abrasion resistance.
  • High vibration absorption or damping capacity.
  • Higher fatigue strength than conventional materials.
  • Attractive and lightweight design.
  • New generation of rifle butts to meet demand at competitive prices. CREST – Bergara International Rifles
