Human health and biomedicine

Health promotion and disease prevention are prime objectives in the EU. Non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and asthma are the leading causes of death worldwide and represent an emerging threat to global health. Similarly, infectious diseases, including antimicrobial resistant infections, and air pollution represent major health risks in the EU and worldwide. These challenges call for biotechnological innovations to investigate disease mechanisms and require health solutions to be developed.

At GAIKER, we develop and use 2D and 3D in vitro cellular model systems of healthy and diseased tissues for human health research. We use in vitro models of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, dermal, immune and central nervous systems for toxicological studies and efficacy testing of different molecules.

Projects

platicFate

Development of twelve new bio-based technologies to address the four most common soil and groundwater contaminants in Europe: heavy metals, mineral oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile aromatic hydrocarbons.

skintreat
nanother

Development of nanoparticles capable of detecting the location of tumours and eliminating the corresponding tumours, with a controlled release of the drug contained inside them.
