HISTORY

GAIKER, Technological Group for New Materials, was created in 1985, under the protection of the Biscay Provincial Council and a group of private institutions, with the objective of helping companies to increase their competitiveness by offering support to develop new technologies.

On the other hand, in 1988, once again under the protection of the Biscay Provincial Council and a business group, the Biotechnology Technological Group BIOTEK was constituted to provide support for the industrial, food, pharmaceutical and fine chemistry sectors in business promotion and technological development in the synthesis and manufacture of their products.

In 1992, both centres merged their human resources and equipment, leading to the creation of GAIKER Technological Centre, a new group with the capacity to offer knowledge and technologies in the areas of Non-metallic New Materials, Packaging, Industrial Biotechnology, Environment and Recycling. Five years later, in 1997, the Centre became the non-profit making Foundation that it is at present, lead by a representative group of companies from the Basque and national industrial panorama, as well as by representatives of the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Biscay (Diputación Foral de Bizkaia) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
